A Data Science Central Community
The Institution of Professional Engineers, Japan (IPEJ) hold a seminar for Big Data in 119th Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Central Course of IPEJ, titled ”Practical Use Case of Big Data and Statistical Science”, on 18th January 2014 at ACCESS Aoyama Forum, Aoyama, Tokyo, Japan. It was a great success with over 120 participants. The majority of audiences was professional engineers of information technology in Japan. It seems there is the strong interest to big data processing in Japan.

Along with the rapid development of the Internet worldwide in recent years, the amount of digital data is growing rapidly. Google has developed a system called BigTable, and construct the world's largest data search system. Based on this technology, big data analysis handling a large amount of data has been popularized. In addition, though the statistics is indispensable to handle large amount of data, it has not been recognized by the public and not been popularized effectively in Japan. Though "the practical use of big data and the application of statistics" are the key factors in decision making in business scene, lack of human resources for data scientists, who can handle with big data, has become a problem. In this seminar, an academic researcher and business persons who are active in big data handling and statistics were invited as speakers. And it is intended to deepen the recognition of big data and statistics and to contribute the development of human resource for data science.
