Transferring large datasets especially with heterogeneous file sizes (i.e. many small and large files together) causes inefficient utilization of the available network bandwidth. Small file transfers may cause the underlying transfer protocol not reaching the full network utilization due to short-duration transfers and connection start up/tear down overhead; and large file transfers may suffer from protocol inefficiency and end-system limitations.
Application-level TCP tuning…

Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) is a relatively new phenomenon. Some say it's definitely a game of skill, others claim it's just another form of gambling and shouldn't be legal.
DFS, ''the next big thing'' is taking North America by storm and slowly knocking on Europe's doors. The way it works is simple: sports lovers select a team of real world athletes…

With the growing amount of information being created daily, big data is providing marketers a means to find consumers who are in-market for the products or services your company sells. However, since this data is growing so rapidly and is stored in so many places (i.e. social networks, blogs, forums, public records, databases), it is near impossible for marketers to quickly find all the data they need on in-market prospects without expertise and tools.
I created an infographic that…

The combination of cloud computing and big data is a match made in heaven. Big data requires a flexible compute environment, which can scale quickly and automatically to support massive amounts of data. Infrastructure clouds provide exactly that. But whenever cloud computing is discussed, the question comes up:
When it…

Big data is most often defined by volume, velocity and variety. But it is veracity, validity and value that are big data’s real 3Vs. For it’s the information we glean from data that yields better decisions.
The big risk in the big data hype is that we don’t focus on the value – and quality – of the data we are storing and analyzing. We will expend a lot of cost and energy to generate a low return on all of that data because the models and algorithms they drive will serve no more…

The mainframe’s strongest assets – scalability, reliability, availability, security and manageability – are the very characteristics that enterprises are most concerned about as they consider moving business-critical services to a cloud-based architecture. Can the mainframe be a cloud platform?
Recent surveys underscore customer confidence in the mainframe’s ability to perform in new service delivery models. Growing numbers are considering IBM’s zSeries Enterprise as a cloud…

The link between strategy and data has never been stronger. And the economics between the two has never been clearer; the potential return on a properly implemented big data analytics investment can be nothing short of game-changing – if it is done strategically. It is therefore imperative to make data strategy part of corporate strategy.
The three main levers of return on investment (ROI) are cost efficiencies, productivity gains and incremental revenue generation. These levers…
