Academic Leads: Prof Nigel Davies and Prof Idris Eckley
As part of a major new investment in Data Science we are seeking outstanding individuals for four new academic positions in the foundations of Data Science to develop the next generation of cutting edge tools and methods.
This is an opportunity to join a world-leading community of researchers at an exciting time. Data Science is a key area of growth for Lancaster University and is founded on historic strengths in Computer Science, Statistics and Operational Research. These groups have an outstanding research track record as evidenced in research assessment exercises and provide a vibrant environment for researchers with excellent facilities and support.
The posts form part of a strategic investment that includes eight new positions in the Data Sciences. Together with existing expertise at Lancaster, these positions will form part of a new world-class, multidisciplinary Data Science Institute that will set the global standard for an interdisciplinary approach to contemporary data-driven research challenges. Joining at the start, appointments will help play a key role in shaping this exciting new initiative.
Applications are particularly encouraged from those who can make significant contributions in the foundations of Data Science. You will typically have a background in Computer Science, Statistics, Operational Research or a related discipline. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: causal inference; image processing; machine learning; methods and algorithms for streaming and real-time data; novel storage architectures; cloud systems and configuration; optimization for data applications, data-driven Operational Research, sampling and compression; visualization.

Lecturer (x4) in Applied Data Science
Academic Lead: Professor Nigel Davies & Professor Idris Eckley
We are seeking four outstanding individuals (Assistant Professor) who can apply cutting-edge data science techniques to challenges in the areas of: environment, resilience and sustainability; health and ageing; security and privacy; data and society. You will be expected to work at the intersection of their chosen domain and the computational and mathematical foundations of data science.
Lancaster University has an outstanding track-record in multidisciplinary research and these posts formpart of a strategic investment that includes eight new positions in the Data Sciences. Together with existing expertise at Lancaster, these positions will form part of a new world-class, multidisciplinary Data Science Institute that will set the global standard for a truly interdisciplinary approach to contemporary data-driven research challenges. Joining at the start, appointments will help play a key role in shaping this exciting new initiative.
Reflecting the cross-disciplinary nature of these posts we expect candidates will find homes either in one of Lancaster's world-leading domain-specific groups (e.g. Lancaster Environment Centre, CHICAS, Security Lancaster, LICA and Sociology) or in more traditional data science departments, depending on their background and interests.
